The Story of “Esperanza”
Esperanza in Spanish is translated as “hope.”
Dr. Eddy Moise, Jr. had a humble upbringing in the Bedfordstuyvesant neighborhood of New York with his mother and older sister, Dr. Moise remembers his humble beginnings growing up in the rough neighborhood of “Do or Die Bedstuy” in the heart of Brooklyn. Despite all the negativity in Brooklyn, Eddy remained focused on the instruction of his Panamanian mother. Truth be told, Eddy had more fear of his mother than he did of anyone else outside of his home. In the midst of a community filled with crime, drugs, alcohol and more, Eddy’s mother kept him involved in church, singing in the choir, youth group, playing organized sports, exposing him to plays in Manhattan, and more. With hopelessness surrounding him, today he acknowledges that he is who he is because of the hope that his mother instilled in him. Today, Eddy is a testament of that hope as a first-generation college graduate to now Dr. Moise.
Having a mother from Panama and a father from Haiti, Eddy is a beneficiary of immigrant grace. Spending a lifetime deeply rooted in the hope embedded in him as a child has driven Dr. Moise’s commitment to instilling hope in others. This is reflected in his ongoing career path. He served as a Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, Case Manager, School Social Worker and Medical Discharge Planner, and for the Urban League of Broward County. Second, through his vocation as a Pastor, feeding the hungry, providing clothing, and helping the homeless, advocating for the needy, providing scholarships to youth, adopting schools, volunteering at schools, mentoring youth, and inspiring college students. These acts of grace and hope, instilled in Dr. Moise from childhood by his mother and her native Spanish language, formed the groundwork for inspiring a better future and gave birth to The Esperanza Foundation.
